Frescoes of the Chapel of Saint Blaise (Capilla de San Blas), Toledo Cathedral

Date: Late 14th century
Artists: Unnamed Florentine painters
Style: Gothic with strong Italo-Byzantine influence

Commissioned by the wealthy Spanish cardinal Pedro Tenorio to add to his personal funerary chapel, this mural required Italian florentine* painters to come to Spain. Due to this the mural looks very similar to the Italian gothic traditional paintings and the influence of trecento schools. The ceiling fresco shows many religious scenes like the Last Judgement, Resurrection, Heaven and Hell, and Christ in Majesty. The striking blue center brings a strong focal point to the piece giving it balance and symmetry that was important for Italian Gothic art. This mural bridged a cultural divide between the Iberian peninsula and Italy at the time which helped strengthen the European art scene.
