Romanesque Frescoes of the Iglesia de San Román
Anonymous artists | c. 1221 | Fresco on plaster

Contrasting to the Gothic frescoes located elsewhere in this room, this Romanesque fresco shows the multiplicity of styles and influences in Toledo's art scene. Once again there are famous christian figures and moments such as the four evanglisists, Matthew (angel), Mark (lion), Luke (ox), and John (eagle) and the The Last Judgement. In addition to these religious characters, spainish political leaders are also shown most notably archbishops including the Saint Stephen, Saint Lawrence, Saint Isidore of Seville, and Saint Eugene of Toledo. The inclusion of these leaders, once again shows the strong interplay between religion and politics in Toledo Art Culture. One belief shown in this painting that is not present in the other frescoes is the inclusion of Mudejar styles. The frescoes are interspersed with Mudéjar-style geometric patterns and Arabic inscriptions, which reflects the cultural amalgamation of Christian and Islamic art forms in Toledo and medieval Spain as a whole..
